I originally shot this photograph on assignment for de Volkskrant newspaper, featuring my former assistant Eva as the model for a piece about teeth whitening. To construct a set of 'teeth', I gathered a variety of pearl necklaces and bracelets. The final outcome remains one of my absolute favorites, masterfully playing with ambiguity. Pearls strikes a powerful balance between dualities, symbolizing both a sensual vulva-like form and the raw, defiant edge of a growling upper lip.

I created this self-portrait during the pandemic lockdown for the exhibition 'Touch Me'. In a time when everything became distant and sterile, I deeply missed the warmth of others and became acutely aware of what that human connection does to me. To make that warmth tangible, I photographed myself pressed against a sheet of glass, literally blowing my warm breath onto it.

I wanted my physicality and human microbes to feel alluring rather than repulsive. Even the saliva slowly tracing its way down from my lip only intensifies the magnetism of the image. The result is a dreamlike photograph that serves as a memory of what was, while fiercely longing for what was yet to come.

Feathers is a psychological game played with the viewer. Looking at the image, you cannot help but wonder: am I eating a sweet, innocent little bird, or are my words so soft and tender that feathers are literally pouring from my mouth? It is precisely that unsettling question that excites me.

As in much of my work, I deliberately play with contrasts. While a photograph must always be aesthetic to me, it also needs to create friction beneath the surface. The mouth refuses to be tame, claiming its own autonomous space in all its mystery.

Sometimes I get so inspired by the texture of flower petals that they begin to feel physical, almost like flesh. The soft hairs and subtle bumps on the petal of this lily were remarkably organic, something I deeply love. It creates a fascinating tension: on one hand, the image is soft and delicate; on the other, it feels raw and visceral.

This contrast is exactly what interests me when visually defining my own experience of femininity. In this photograph, I let the petal literally become one with my body, dissolving into it. Because it is an extreme close-up, you are brought right up against my skin. The details are so sharp and intimate that the tiny hairs on both the leaf and my skin are almost tangible, as if you could reach out and stroke them.
